"Open Doors" vs. "Door busting"
guys,
I was in a class earlier today and we were talking about 'how you know that you are called to ministry'.... what a coincidence! Either way, I think a lot of things from the spurgeon reading came up, so I won't tread that ground right now. We can talk about it Thursday.
One thing that stood out to me as something that we did not discuss was this: "Providential Events" (what I called 'open doors' in the title); do they play into our calling? If you think it is something that is involved in your calling, can you think of any scriptural support? Or do you think that the church has stressed this part of being 'called' too much?
Do you think this is a legitimate part of being called? Or should we just plow ahead and fight obstacles without GT1's [God things--clear acts of God, as p mike would say] ("door busting")...

that is an interesting point there Eric. I would say my first reaction would be that we should pay attention to the providential door openings of our Lord. Not that it is the same as Paul, but he tried to go to asia but the Spirit didnt allow him and he finishes off his book to the romans by informing them that he has wanted to visit them, but has not been able to get there. Those passages might not apply so much, but it seems like the Lord provides for those whom He chooses.
Just some thoughts
yea dave, I think that's a good point. something I wasn't willing to state outright that I thought, but I agree; In many ways we should be mindful of them, but we should not expect them as normative.
That's a good point about God turning Paul back too, I think we can fail to do what God does by blazing our own trail. Just like in the spurgeon reading, we need to have some of the signs present in our lives to be in ministry...
I absoulutely agree that God opens doors to us -"providential events" as you called it. Dave made a great point that God placed directions in front of Paul to help guide him, but that was also before the end of the Bible (the ultimate guide for us in this age). PJ actually brought this up last meeting, that our Lord does open up doors for us as confirmation to our calling. This should be kept on the d.l. for serious inquisitors only, however, because certain charasmaniac groups can use this over Scripture which is obviously a huge error.
